Who This Is For

This is for
  • You want to compare medication options, monthly costs, and state availability across multiple telehealth providers.
  • You prefer reviewing licensed provider programs independently before committing to a subscription.
  • The FDA-approved labeling for Wegovy and Zepbound covers weight reduction in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, and in adults with a BMI of 27 or higher who have at least one weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. If you are near either number, ask a licensed provider where you fall before choosing a platform.
  • If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, the Wegovy label directs you to stop semaglutide once pregnancy is recognized and two months before a planned pregnancy, so raise it at intake.
  • If you are breastfeeding, ask the provider what the label for the specific medication says, because the labels differ.
  • If you have a history of disordered eating, tell the provider at intake, because it is part of what a prescriber weighs before starting a weight loss medication.
  • If you have had bariatric surgery or are considering it, tell the provider at intake, because it changes what a prescriber will consider.
  • A remote visit cannot include a physical exam or in-office testing. If that matters for your situation, raise it with a licensed provider before choosing a platform.
  • If this is an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Telehealth is not for emergency care.

These notes are not a medical screening: a licensed provider decides after an intake review whether a treatment is appropriate for you.

Nurx vs PlushCare 2026: Women's Health Specialist vs Full Primary Care Telehealth Platform

Eric GoldWritten by Eric GoldEditor-in-Chief
15 min readUpdated August 22, 2026

Table of Contents

Nurx and PlushCare represent fundamentally different telehealth approaches - one a women's health platform offering convenient asynchronous consultations across reproductive health, birth control, and female-specific categories with cash-pay pricing, the other a full-scope primary care platform providing insurance-billed video consultations managing diverse medical conditions for all genders and ages. This in-depth comparison analyzes service scope, pricing models, consultation approaches, insurance acceptance, weight loss treatment, and maturity to help patients evaluate specialty women's health expertise versus primary care breadth for their specific healthcare needs.

Platform Overview

Nurx launched in 2015 as a women's health specialist telehealth platform initially focused on birth control access, later expanding into broader women's health categories including migraine treatment, dermatology, mental health, weight loss, and sexual wellness. With 9+ years of history, significant venture funding, and a focused mission on women's healthcare access, Nurx has established itself as a leading specialty telehealth provider serving primarily female patients across multiple interconnected health categories.
The platform emphasizes discreet, convenient access to medications and treatments that women historically faced barriers obtaining, including emergency contraception, PrEP for HIV prevention, genital herpes treatment, and now GLP-1 weight loss medications. Nurx operates with licensed healthcare providers across all 50 states, offering asynchronous consultations, home delivery of medications, and specialty-specific care pathways designed around women's health needs rather than general primary care models, according to FDA semaglutide safety information.
PlushCare launched in 2014 as a full-service primary care telehealth platform offering virtual urgent care, chronic disease management, mental health services, prescription management, and specialty consultations across a broad range of medical conditions. With 10+ years of history and focus on replacing traditional in-person primary care visits with high-quality virtual consultations, PlushCare positions itself as a full-service healthcare platform rather than a specialty provider.
The platform emphasizes same-day or next-day appointments with board-certified physicians via video consultations, acceptance of most major health insurance plans, and ability to manage a wide range of acute and chronic conditions from common colds to diabetes management to weight loss treatment. PlushCare serves all genders across multiple age groups with comprehensive primary care rather than a focus on any one demographic or health category.

Service Scope and Category Coverage

Nurx Women's Health Specialization: Nurx offers services across six interconnected women's health categories: reproductive health (birth control, emergency contraception, UTI treatment, STI testing), sexual wellness (PrEP, herpes treatment), dermatology (acne, anti-aging, melasma), migraine treatment (prescription medications, prevention), mental health (anxiety, depression medications), and weight loss (GLP-1 medications for female patients). The platform designs care pathways specifically for women's health needs with deep expertise in hormonal health, reproductive medicine, and conditions disproportionately affecting female patients.
The women's health focus means Nurx providers develop deep expertise in conditions like hormonal acne, migraine patterns related to menstrual cycles, contraceptive management including challenging cases, and women-specific considerations for weight loss treatment including pregnancy planning and hormonal factors. Services are interconnected - patients can manage birth control, acne treatment, and migraine medication through a single platform with providers who understand how these conditions interact in female patients.
PlushCare Comprehensive Primary Care: PlushCare offers full-scope primary care services across 15+ categories including urgent care (infections, injuries, common illnesses), chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, asthma, thyroid disorders), mental health (anxiety, depression, ADHD), weight loss (GLP-1 medications), men's health (ED, hair loss, testosterone), women's health (birth control, UTI), dermatology, and preventive care. The platform functions as virtual primary care replacement rather than specialty focus.
The scope means PlushCare physicians manage medical needs from acute infections to chronic disease monitoring to preventive care, with video consultations allowing for fuller assessment than asynchronous text-based models. Patients can address multiple unrelated health concerns in single appointments, receive referrals to specialists, coordinate care across conditions, and maintain ongoing primary care relationships through virtual visits. However, the generalist approach means less specialized expertise in specific categories compared to platforms dedicating full focus to particular health areas like women's health.
Scope Comparison: Nurx delivers deep women's health specialization with interconnected services designed specifically for female patients and expertise in hormonal health, reproductive medicine, and women-specific treatment considerations. PlushCare provides everyday primary care breadth serving all genders with ability to manage diverse medical conditions but less depth in any particular category. For patients seeking women's health expertise with providers deeply familiar with female-specific considerations across birth control, hormones, and interconnected conditions, Nurx offers focused specialization. For patients needing versatile primary care platform managing diverse health concerns across family members or requiring medical management beyond specialty focus, PlushCare delivers broader capabilities despite less women's health specialization.

Pricing Models and Insurance Acceptance

Nurx Cash-Pay Specialty Pricing: Nurx operates primarily on a cash-pay subscription model with service pricing varying by category. Nurx's last-recorded birth control figure is a $28 consult that covers a year (May 2026), with prescription costs varying by contraceptive method. Its last-recorded weight-loss figures are a $49 consult, then $59/mo (May 2026). Consultation fees for its other categories aren't recorded in our provider database - confirm current rates directly. Most services involve upfront consultation fees plus separate medication costs charged monthly or per prescription.
The platform accepts insurance for medication coverage but consultation fees are typically cash-pay. Nurx helps patients submit superbills for potential insurance reimbursement and checks medication coverage through patient insurance plans, but the platform itself does not typically bill insurance directly for consultations. This cash-pay model keeps consultation costs relatively low but means patients pay out-of-pocket for provider access even when insurance covers medications.
PlushCare Insurance-Based Pricing: PlushCare accepts most major health insurance plans including Medicare and Medicaid, billing insurance directly for video consultations at standard office visit rates; if your plan covers visits, your copay could be far lower than cash rates. For patients without insurance or choosing cash-pay, PlushCare's last-recorded visit fee is $129 (May 2026). The platform functions like traditional primary care with standard insurance billing rather than specialty subscription pricing.
Medication costs are separate and billed through patient insurance or paid via pharmacy directly. For weight loss treatment, PlushCare consultation fees (a last-recorded $129 cash-pay visit or copay amounts with insurance) plus medication costs create total monthly expenses, though insurance acceptance means many patients pay only copays for provider visits. The insurance-based model means lower consultation costs for insured patients but higher cash-pay rates for those without coverage compared to Nurx's specialty consultation fees.
Pricing Model Comparison: For insured patients, PlushCare's insurance billing can mean lower out-of-pocket consultation costs than Nurx's cash-pay fees, depending on your plan. For uninsured patients, pricing is mixed: Nurx consultation fees are lower for some services (a last-recorded $28 consult covering a year of birth control vs PlushCare's last-recorded $129 visit) but PlushCare's primary care visits may address multiple concerns in single appointment versus separate Nurx consultations per category. The key difference is insurance acceptance - PlushCare functions like traditional primary care billing insurance directly, while Nurx operates specialty cash-pay model with better pricing for patients without insurance or with high deductibles but less favorable for patients with good insurance coverage seeking to minimize out-of-pocket costs.

Consultation Models and Provider Access

Nurx Asynchronous Text-Based Consultations: Nurx operates primarily through asynchronous text-based consultations where patients complete medical questionnaires, upload photos when relevant (dermatology, rashes), answer health history questions, and receive provider responses within 24 hours typically. Providers review information, ask follow-up questions via secure messaging, and issue prescriptions or recommendations without real-time video appointments for most services, according to FSMB telemedicine prescribing policies.
The asynchronous model offers maximum convenience - patients complete consultations on their schedule without appointment scheduling, waiting rooms, or specific appointment times. However, the text-based approach limits medical assessment compared to video examinations. For straightforward prescription renewals, birth control management, or conditions where visual assessment suffices (dermatology), asynchronous care works well. For complex conditions requiring discussion, physical examination cues, provider dialogue, text-based consultations have limitations.
PlushCare Synchronous Video Consultations: PlushCare requires real-time video appointments with board-certified physicians, typically 15-30 minutes depending on visit complexity. Appointments are scheduled for specific times (often same-day or next-day availability), conducted via video platform, and function like traditional doctor visits with live dialogue, ability to ask questions in real-time, visual assessment, discussion of symptoms and treatment plans.
The synchronous video model enables fuller medical assessment with back-and-forth dialogue, ability to visually examine patients during appointments, and more nuanced clinical evaluation compared to asynchronous text. However, it requires scheduling specific appointment times, waiting for providers in virtual waiting rooms, and dedicating 15-30 minutes to live consultations rather than completing questionnaires on flexible schedules. For complex medical issues, new diagnoses, or conditions requiring detailed discussion, video consultations provide superior clinical evaluation.
Consultation Model Trade-offs: Nurx asynchronous model maximizes convenience and flexibility without appointment scheduling or real-time requirements, ideal for straightforward prescription management and conditions where visual assessment (photos) or questionnaire information suffices. PlushCare synchronous video model enables in-depth medical evaluation with live dialogue and visual examination, better for complex conditions but requiring appointment scheduling and time. For women seeking convenient birth control access, prescription renewals, or straightforward dermatology treatments, Nurx asynchronous approach offers superior convenience. For patients needing primary care assessment, complex medical management, or preferring traditional doctor-patient dialogue, PlushCare video consultations deliver better clinical evaluation despite less flexibility.

Weight Loss Treatment Comparison

Nurx Weight Loss for Women: Nurx offers GLP-1 weight loss medications specifically for female patients, with treatment pathways designed around women's health considerations including pregnancy planning, hormonal factors, menstrual cycle impacts, and integration with other women's health services patients may use through the platform. Last-recorded pricing is a $49 consult, then $59/mo (May 2026) - Nurx isn't currently shown in our weight-loss provider rankings - with asynchronous consultations and quarterly follow-ups.
The women's health specialization means providers consider female-specific factors like impact on fertility, contraception coordination (important given pregnancy contraindications for GLP-1 medications), hormonal interactions, and how weight loss intersects with other women's health conditions. However, Nurx offers minimal lifestyle support beyond medication - no medical coaching, no nutritional counseling teams, no structured exercise programming, and basic monitoring focused on medication safety rather than weight management.
PlushCare General Population Weight Loss: PlushCare offers GLP-1 weight loss treatment for all genders through primary care model. Physicians prescribe semaglutide or tirzepatide based on clinical assessment during video consultations, with pricing consisting of a last-recorded $129 cash-pay visit fee (May 2026) or insurance copays, plus medication costs that vary by prescription and pharmacy. Follow-up appointments monitor progress and adjust dosages.
The primary care approach means weight loss integrates into overall health management - physicians can address related conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or thyroid disorders in same appointments, coordinate full-service medical care, and provide health guidance. However, like Nurx, PlushCare offers minimal weight loss support beyond physician consultations - no dedicated medical coaching, no nutritional counseling teams, no structured lifestyle programming found in weight-loss-only platforms.
Weight Loss Service Comparison: Both platforms offer medication-focused weight loss treatment without lifestyle support, medical coaching, or nutritional counseling found in weight loss programs. Nurx provides women-focused treatment with consideration of female-specific factors and integration with other women's health services, delivered through a convenient asynchronous model at a last-recorded $49 consult, then $59/mo (May 2026). PlushCare delivers weight loss within full primary care context allowing integration with overall health management, through video consultations at variable costs depending on insurance. For women seeking convenient GLP-1 access coordinated with women's health considerations, Nurx offers exactly that. For patients wanting weight loss integrated into primary care with video consultations and insurance billing, PlushCare provides broader medical context despite less women's health specialization.

Platform Maturity and Reliability

Nurx Established Women's Health Platform: Nurx launched in 2015 with over 9 years of history, significant venture funding, and a proven track record delivering women's health services across reproductive health, contraception, STI treatment, and expanded categories. The platform has navigated regulatory challenges specific to reproductive health, maintained operations through changing healthcare markets, and demonstrated sustainable business model focused on women's healthcare access.
The company operates with transparent leadership, disclosed clinical teams, multi-state licensure for providers, and established infrastructure for asynchronous telehealth delivery at scale. Partnerships with pharmacies and medication manufacturers ensure reliable prescription fulfillment. The 9+ year history demonstrates sustainability and commitment to women's health specialty focus rather than pivot to different market segments - patients can expect continued service delivery for multi-year treatment relationships.
PlushCare Mature Primary Care Platform: PlushCare launched in 2014 with over 10 years of history, substantial funding, and proven ability to deliver primary care virtually to large patient populations. The platform has established partnerships with major insurance companies, integrated with healthcare systems, maintained network of thousands of board-certified physicians, and demonstrated sustainable primary care telehealth model accepted by insurance payers.
The company operates with transparent operations, disclosed physician network credentials, state licensure, and video consultation infrastructure handling high appointment volumes. Partnerships with major health insurers demonstrate legitimacy and financial sustainability through reimbursement relationships. The 10+ year history shows ability to sustain full-service primary care telehealth model - patients can rely on platform availability for ongoing primary care relationships.
Maturity Assessment: Both platforms demonstrate strong maturity with 9-10+ years proven track records, significant funding, transparent operations, and sustainable business models. Nurx shows commitment to women's health specialization through consistent focus on reproductive and female-specific health categories. PlushCare demonstrates primary care sustainability through insurance acceptance service offerings. Both present low risk for patients beginning multi-year treatment relationships - either platform shows reliability indicators supporting confidence in continued service availability. The maturity difference is minimal; both are established, well-funded telehealth providers with proven longevity, according to FDA GLP-1 safety warnings.

Final Verdict: Nurx vs PlushCare

Choose Nurx if: You are a woman seeking women's health expertise with providers deeply familiar with reproductive health, birth control, hormonal conditions, and female-specific medical considerations across interconnected health categories. You value maximum convenience through asynchronous consultations without appointment scheduling, prefer cash-pay transparency over insurance billing complexity, and want access to multiple women's health services (birth control, dermatology, migraine treatment, weight loss) through single platform designed specifically for female patients. Appropriate for women managing multiple women's health needs who prioritize specialty expertise and convenient prescription access without insurance requirements.

Choose PlushCare if: You need full-service primary care platform managing diverse medical conditions across family members, want to use health insurance coverage to minimize out-of-pocket costs through insurance-billed video consultations, or require thorough medical evaluation through live video appointments with back-and-forth dialogue and full assessment. You value ability to address multiple unrelated health concerns in single appointments, need primary care services beyond women's health categories, or serve as healthcare coordinator for family members of all genders and ages. Appropriate for patients with good health insurance seeking versatile primary care replacement managing diverse conditions through traditional video consultation model.

Bottom line: Nurx and PlushCare represent fundamentally different telehealth models - one a women's health specialist offering convenient asynchronous care with deep expertise in female-specific conditions, the other a full primary care platform providing insurance-billed video consultations managing medical needs across all demographics. Nurx delivers superior women's health specialization with maximum convenience for straightforward prescription management and interconnected women's health conditions through cash-pay model favoring uninsured patients or those with high deductibles. PlushCare provides everyday primary care breadth with insurance acceptance favoring insured patients seeking versatile healthcare platform managing diverse conditions through traditional video consultation approach. For women seeking reproductive health expertise, birth control management, hormonal condition treatment, and convenient asynchronous access, Nurx offers focused women's health platform with deep specialty knowledge. For patients needing insured primary care managing diverse medical needs across family members with video consultations, PlushCare delivers versatile healthcare platform despite less women's health specialization. Neither offers full weight loss programs with medical coaching and lifestyle support - weight loss platforms provide superior outcomes for patients prioritizing structured weight management. The choice depends primarily on healthcare needs scope (women's health vs general primary care), consultation preference (convenient asynchronous vs video), and insurance status (cash-pay advantage Nurx vs insurance acceptance favoring PlushCare).

How we scoreOur 1 to 10 brand scores are our own editorial judgment. They are not aggregated from third-party review platforms and they are not the output of a scoring formula.

What a starting price isA starting price is the lowest figure a company lists for a category, not a quote. What you pay follows a clinician's review of your intake, and where a required membership or care plan sits alongside the medication we publish the two charges combined.

Reading a warning letterA close-out letter is FDA's record that it has evaluated a company's corrective actions, so the absence of one means the file is not closed on the public record, and nothing more than that.

Regulatory noticeRegulatory note (verified October 8, 2026): On February 20, 2026 the FDA issued MEDVi, LLC a warning letter (MARCS-CMS 721455) citing misbranding under sections 502(a) and 502(bb) of the FD&C Act. Reviewing medvi.io in December 2025, the FDA said labels bearing "MEDVi" implied MEDVi compounds the drugs when it does not, and that site copy presenting the compounded drug as having the same active ingredient as Wegovy and Ozempic, and as Mounjaro and Zepbound, implied an FDA approval compounded drugs do not have. The letter adds that introducing or delivering the products it identifies into interstate commerce is a prohibited act under section 301(a), that receiving them in interstate commerce and delivering or offering to deliver them also violates section 301(c), and that a compounded drug product must meet the conditions of section 503A or 503B of the FD&C Act to be exempt from certain requirements, including the new drug approval requirements. When we checked FDA's warning letter index for MEDVi, LLC on October 8, 2026 it showed no response letter and no close-out letter entered against it, so the letter is not closed out on the public record. MEDVi states medvi.io is affiliate-operated rather than company-operated; we could not verify that, and the letter is addressed to MEDVi, LLC. Read the FDA letter
